Design tools and software

Ease and cost of design are important factors in the choice, efficient design, and buildability of building frames.

Much of The Concrete Centre's output is aimed at freeing the designer from laborious tasks to allow time to choose the best structure using further design tools. These include computer programs and design manual publications. This section contains easy links to these:

CALcrete is a free comprehensive suite of 16 computer-aided e-learning modules on concrete materials, design and construction, containing essential material and information for all construction professionals - from architects to site engineers.

Concept V3

Concept V3 is an invaluable tool for the conceptual design of reinforced concrete frames which enables the comparison and determination of the optimum structural solution. It assists with concrete frame choice, member sizes and reinforcement estimates.

Dynamic Thermal Properties Calculator

A free tool for calculating the thermal properties of construction elements has been launched by The Concrete Centre following development by Arup.

Passive Design Assistant

This software tool helps demonstrate the passive design principles of buildings to non-specialists, and enables key design variables such as orientation, ventilation and thermal mass to be more easily understood.

RC Spreadsheets v4b.2

For the experienced engineer, the spreadsheets allow the rapid production of clear and accurate design calculations. For post-graduates and new engineers they encourage understanding of concrete design and help the gaining of experience by studying 'what if' scenarios.
